From a gathering of friends to a compassionate community.
Founded in 1986, Nihon Kairali began with a simple yet meaningful aspiration — to keep the culture, traditions and spirit of Kerala alive in Japan, our Karmabhoomi, while creating a sense of belonging for Malayalees living far from their Janmabhoomi.
What started as a small circle of Malayalees in the Tokyo–Yokohama area has grown over four decades into a vibrant community spread across Japan. Today, Nihon Kairali brings together more than 1,500 members, including engineers, scientists, artists, educators, entrepreneurs, students, families and a dynamic younger generation.

Celebrating Kerala in Japan
Throughout the year, Nihon Kairali creates opportunities for members and friends to come together and celebrate the traditions that connect us to Kerala.
From the grandeur of Onam and the joy of Hanami, to community Christmas gatherings and Iftar, our celebrations bring people together across generations and backgrounds.
Our events are not only about preserving tradition. They are also opportunities to introduce the richness of Kerala's culture, food, arts and way of life to our Japanese friends and the wider community.
A Stage for Art and Talent
Nihon Kairali believes that every generation has a story to tell and a talent worth sharing.
Our Talent Show brings together performers from kindergarten children to veteran members, featuring dance, music, skits, karaoke, painting and literature.
Through Yavanika Theatres, our associated theatre group, community members write, perform and produce Malayalam and English plays that explore connections between Indian and Japanese cultures.
Our annual magazine, Thaliyola, has been documenting and celebrating the voices and creativity of our community since 1995.
Community Means Caring
Community is not only about celebrating together. It is also about standing together when someone needs a helping hand.
Through NK Care, launched in December 2023, Nihon Kairali channels the collective strength of its members towards supporting people in need both in Japan and Kerala.
Our initiatives include disaster relief, support for families affected by the Wayanad landslides, educational assistance for underprivileged children, food donations to people in need, medical support and community volunteer activities.
From Kerala disaster relief to supporting schoolchildren through the Heart to Heart initiative, our members continue to demonstrate that distance does not diminish our responsibility towards our home.
Growing Together
A strong community helps its members not only socially, but professionally.
Our Career Development initiatives create opportunities for members to learn, connect and support one another in their professional journeys in Japan.
Sessions have covered subjects such as tax planning and navigating the Japanese job market, while upcoming initiatives focus on areas including returning to the workforce after a career break and helping students and families make informed decisions about higher education in Japan.
Beyond formal sessions, members also share career opportunities and professional knowledge — turning the strength of our network into opportunities for one another.
Keeping Healthy, Staying Connected
Sport has always been another way for our community to connect.
Nihon Kairali works with partner clubs and volunteer coaches across Japan to support activities including badminton, cricket, futsal, football, volleyball and tennis.
For children especially, these activities provide more than exercise. They create friendships, confidence and a sense of belonging.
Building Bridges
Nihon Kairali is proud to contribute to the wider Indian community in Japan and to strengthen the relationship between India, Kerala and Japan.
We work alongside Indian community organisations and cultural groups, participate in initiatives such as the One India Festival, and maintain connections with organisations representing communities from across India.
Our relationships with the Embassy of India and the Government of Kerala further strengthen our ability to support members and contribute to meaningful cultural, educational, charitable and community initiatives.

The Next Chapter
From 1986 to today, the story of Nihon Kairali has been written by thousands of people — through their time, talent, friendship, generosity and commitment.
The organisation has evolved over the years, becoming a registered NPO in 2021 and growing into a community of more than 1,500 members. Yet the fundamental idea remains unchanged:
To bring Malayalees together, preserve our culture, care for those in need, and build meaningful connections between Kerala, India and Japan.
Four decades later, that thread continues.
